DIY - Tercel 91 - 94 Oil Change & Tune Up

 

 

This DIY is on a 1993 Toyota Tercel with a 1.5L FI SOHC 4cyl , 3E - E .

 

 This is a basic oil change , You drain your oil pan , remove the oil filter , Because this vehicle has alot of miles I did a 10w 40 oil change and added STP . Its your car you can put either OEM or what is good for you .

 

 

Make sure you wipe the area before putting back your new oil filter and put a light coat of oil on the rubber part on the oil filter hand tighten then add oil .

 

 

 

This is the Tune up .

Before removing your distributor cap there is the intake hose to your air filter cause it will make it easier . Its your car so if you don't or do either way .

Now on this vehicle the plugs & cap are one piece . I'm sure they sell them separate but I bought them as one . When you put your rotor button back I added some anti seize .

Then once you replaced your cap & rotor you can remove the front of the cold intake hose so you can gave easy access to the spark plugs .

Make sure you put anti seize on the thread of all your plugs , gap your plugs . They say your plugs are pre gap but its your car on whether you trust them or not .

The plastic holder for the wires broke so I added a tie strap so that the wires don't fall on the heat shield of the exhaust , Plus I took off the plastic heat shield for the wire that is the farthest so that the heat doesn't soften of melt the wire .

Once you have your plugs back together then you can change your PCV valve .

 

And last you can replace your air filter .

 

 

Once you are finished you start your car and listen for misfires . If all sounds well then you have completed the most easiest tune up and oil change .

DIY - Tercel 91 - 94 Valve Cover Gasket Replacement

This DIY is on a 1993 Toyota Tercel with a 1.5L FI SOHC 4cyl , 3E - E .

 

This is the Valve Cover gasket with Grommets . Best thing to do before you start this job is to power wash your motor especially if you have a leak in your valve cover and want to make sure you have correctly fixed it .

 

 

First thing I did was remove the PCV valve hose to the valve cover then I removed the two nuts holding down the valve cover .



 

 

Once you remove the two nuts with a flat head screw driver gently lift up the valve cover till the grommets come up then remove the grommets then you can remove the valve cover or you can remove the intake hose going to the intake to make it easier when you put the valve cover on .

 

 



As you see in the top photo how much better clearance you have with the intake hose off . In my case my valve cover was rusted and nasty looking so put a rag that is dirt and lint free so if any wind doesn't blow dust or sand in your cam shaft area . Then you can clean up your valve cover from grease and clean the area on the head from grease . In my case I repainted my valve cover .

 

 



 

 

 

Once you finish painting or degreasing your valve cover you can add a little of gasket maker silicone inside the valve cover . Some people use the gasket maker some don't its your vehicle you decide how you do it in my case I used it . Once you apply it on then you put the valve cover gasket in the groove and gently press on in flat then find a clean surface to rest the valve cover on for about a minute or two so that the valve cover can get tacky and lay flat .

 

 

Once you have waited in my case I added just a little of the gasket maker on the bottom of the gasket again its your car if you want to or not is fine . Then you hand add the NEW grommets - DO NOT USE THE OLD GROMMETS because once they have been used they are no good any more because the squeeze flat . Then you hand tight the two nuts go side to side so that it lays flat then you hand tight till the nut stops and the grommets are pushing the valve cover flat . Then you put every thing back into place .

 

 

 

Let your valve cover sit for about five minutes while your cleaning up your area then you can start your vehicle and look for leaks . Wait about a week or two weeks then just check lightly that your two nuts on the grommets are still secure plus the rubber shrinks after it is heated .

DIY - Tercel 91 - 94 P/S , A/C & Alternator Belts

This is a DIY for a Toyota Tercel Power Steering , Air Conditioner Belt and Alternator Belt .

 

First we will take off the Power Steering and Air Conditioning belt off first because to get to the alternator belt you have to . First you remove the plastic splash shield off and remember to clean and put this back on when you are finish .

 

First you loosen up the top bolt on the power steering box then you go from underneath the car and loosen up the bolt on the bracket to the left . To the right is the belt adjusting bolt which you turn and the power steering box will drop down to loosen up the belt to remove it . This bolt has a nut to keep the bolt from vibrating sometime you have to loosen the nut first . Photo below to show you where the nut is located . If your just changing this belt then you redo your steps to put back on .

 Now the alternator belt which is simple process and the belt closest to the motor you loosen up the bracket bolt then go underneath the vehicle and loosen the bottom bolt push alternator forward then remove the belt then to put back on redo the process .

 

Once you replace your belts you adjust the alternator with a pry bar but not tight where the belt will squeal but enough to where you can slightly twist it but not where it is to loose .

 

Now the Power Steering belt and A/C belt you adjust that belt with the adjuster bolt remember not to make it to tight and remember the nut as you see two of them the bottom nut needs to go down to the bracket to keep the bolt from vibrating loose . Then you tighten top and bottom bolts .

The one thing I found out while you have the splash guard off is you can easily clean up the engine before putting it back on .
